During this period, Rea appeared in the film for which he is arguably best known in the United States: the 1992 romantic thriller The Crying Game
Tale
Over the course of four tumultuous decades during the Troubles in Northern Ireland, the real Dolours Price was married for two decades (1983-2003) to Irish actor Stephen Rea.
I highly recommend reading the book for additional context/information, but the series does a fantastic job of covering the subject matter
In this film, Rea plays Fergus, an extremely reluctant and ambivalent member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) – the same organisation Price was involved with for many years.
Very well acted through the different eras of the main characters
The big themes for me are: – in war, everyone thinks they’re on the right side – how far will you go for a cause you believe in, and what happens when that belief is tested or weakened – the sacrificial pawns of war who bear the greatest risks are often easily discarded in the end – the greatest “code” of silence within communities sometimes goes too far – the spoils of war tend to go to the bureaucrats, not the soldiers – in general, an incredibly well-made miniseries.
